Nathan Michael Smith

Farmer CEO

Nathan Michael Smith has spent more than two decades building a career centered on agriculture, land development, and long-term business growth. Based in North Dakota, he serves as President of Smith Farms, Ltd., and Managing Partner at Caliber, a real estate development company with projects throughout the western United States. Over the years, Nathan Michael Smith has focused on expanding family-operated businesses while identifying opportunities in farming, residential development, and land investment. His work reflects a practical approach shaped by persistence, responsibility, and long-term planning.

Early Life and Agricultural Background

Nathan grew up near Minot, North Dakota, where he was raised on his family’s grain and cattle ranch. Farming had already been part of the family history for more than five generations, and much of his understanding of agriculture came directly from his father and grandfather. Through daily work on the farm, he learned the importance of discipline, consistency, and maintaining strong relationships within the local farming community.

Nathan gradually took on greater responsibilities within the family operation as he gained more experience. He observed how earlier generations manipulated both agricultural production and long-term relationships with landowners and neighboring farmers. Those experiences helped shape his understanding of leadership and long-term business management while preparing him for future responsibilities within the operation.

Education and Early Business Ventures

Nathan attended North Dakota State University and earned a degree in Agricultural Economics. His interest in entrepreneurship began well before college. While still in high school, he started a business importing trucks from Canada for resale. By the age of twenty, he was regularly selling refurbished trucks while continuing to pursue additional business opportunities in agriculture and transportation.

Nathan Michael Smith also expanded into several additional ventures during those years, including hauling gravel, reselling farm equipment, purchasing residential properties for resale, and participating in farm consignment auctions. These experiences gave him practical business knowledge and helped him recognize opportunities in both agriculture and real estate. Through those early ventures, he developed operational and financial experience that later supported larger expansion efforts.

Expansion of Smith Farms

Nathan assumed leadership of Smith Farms, Ltd. in 1999, when the operation included approximately 460 leased acres. Through steady growth and long-term planning, the company expanded significantly over the following decades. Today, Smith Farms manages more than 30,000 acres of farmland while continuing to operate large grain and cattle businesses throughout the region.

Nathan continued growing the operation by combining agricultural knowledge with strategic planning and strong community relationships. During the early 2000s, opportunities emerged as local farmers prepared for retirement and additional acreage became available through leasing and purchases. The operation later expanded into Montana through additional farmland acquisitions. Alongside expansion efforts, he focused on improving operational efficiency and reducing financial risk through market analysis and hedge account strategies.

Real Estate Development and Leadership

Nathan entered real estate development around 2011, recognizing the growing housing needs in regional communities. This led to the creation of Heartland Developers, LLC, a company focused on residential development projects designed to support local growth and modern housing opportunities. One of the company’s early projects was 55th Crossing in Minot, which included plans for townhomes and duplexes intended to address increasing housing demand.

Nathan also oversaw additional projects, including the Stonehaven and Highlander developments. Many of these projects were designed to support seasonal agricultural workers and regional communities connected to farming operations. Under his leadership, Heartland Developers completed projects across North Dakota, Colorado, Montana, and Idaho. He also expanded into the development of mountain luxury properties.

Nathan Michael Smith expanded his involvement in development further in 2024, becoming Managing Partner at Caliber. In this role, he conducts financial analysis, economic research, land evaluation, and long-term investment planning for projects across the western United States. His background in agriculture and land management continues to influence his approach to development and risk management.

Community Involvement and Personal Interests

Nathan remains active in agricultural advocacy and community organizations outside of his business responsibilities. He serves on the board of the Trinity Hospital Foundation and participates in the local Chamber of Commerce. He is also involved with the Wheat Growers Association at both the state and national levels, supporting efforts connected to agriculture and future farming opportunities.

Nathan also supports winter sports organizations and nonprofit programs. He previously served with the Big Sky Ski Education Foundation and currently participates on the Big Sky Free Ride Committee Board and the McCall Winter Sports board. Alongside his work in agriculture and development, he enjoys skiing and supporting community initiatives connected to youth programs and local organizations.

Nathan continues balancing leadership roles across agriculture, land development, and community involvement. Through Smith Farms, Heartland Developers, and Caliber, he remains focused on responsible growth, long-term planning, and creating opportunities that support both local communities and future generations connected to agriculture and business.
